GLOBAL WARMING - TDS

GLOBAL WARMING. PANIC OR REALITY?

Global warming is already under way. The evidence is vast and the urgency of taking action becomes clearer with every new scientific study. Some of the most obvious signs are visible in the Arctic, where rising temperatures and melting ice are dramatically changing the region’s unique landscapes and wildlife—as well as people’s lives and livelihoods. Across the globe, other early warning signs include melting glaciers, shifting ranges of plants and animals, and the earlier onset of spring.

VISIT THE LINKS TO ANSWER THESE QUESTIONS:

1. What is global warming?

Global warming is the rise in the average temperature of Earth's atmosphere and oceans since the late 19th century. The temperature of Earth's has increased by about 0.8ºC. The scientists are more than 90% certain that it's primarily caused by the concentrations of greenhouse gases produced by human activities and the pollution.

2. What is the process involved in the greenhouse effect?

The greenhouse effect is a process by which thermal radiation from a planetary surface is absorbed by atmospheric greenhouse gases, and is re-radiated in all directions. Since part of this radiation is back to the space and a part of it enters in the atmosphere of the Earth, it cause an important elevation of the average surface temperature.

3. What signs warn us about global warmming?

WRITING UNIT 9

WRITE AN EMAIL TO AN INTERNET FORUM

Hi

My name's Eva Tarrés and I live in Banyoles in Catalonia. I like the area where I live because is a pacific place, so I want to improve it.

In my opinion there aren't many parks, cinemas, theme parks and open spaces in the area. As a result a lot of young people don't go out because there's a lot of noise and traffic.

I think the council should do something about this. I'm sure they must have some land which local people can use for a park or city garden project.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY SUPERMAN

Superman, the first comic book "superhero", is 75 years old this month. There's a lot of competition from other superheroes, but Superman is still number one...

AN AMERICAN HERO

In 1938, Superman appeared in the first issue of Actiion Comics. At the time, the economy was bad in the USA and Americans needed heroes to give them hope. Superman was perfect: he fought coruption and poverty in Metropolis. Superman was also an immigrant, just like many Americans at the time. Like them, he wanted to succeed in the USA... so he had lots in common with them!

SUPERMAN FILMS

Superman moved from comic books to other media. He became a daily newspaper comic strip, a radio series and an animated cartoon. Then, in 1978, Superman conquered the world with actor Christopher Reeve. The most recent TV series is Smallville about young Clark Kent before he became superman. In 2013, there will be two new Superman films.

WRITING UNIT 4

Writing Unit 4: A BRAVE RESCUE

The rescue happened while we were on a trip in La Molina, Catalonia, last January. It was relly amazing and I was lucky to get a photo of it.

I was with my friends of the sports center. We were skiing throught the mountains when we saw two men and two women. They were shouting and the girls crying. A sliding of snow was coming from the big mountains behind them. A lifeguard on a helicopter was also watching, and as soon as he saw the problem, he went to the people inmediately.

The helicopter rescue the people and they carried them to the hotel. The best thing is that nobody was hurt. The lifeguard was very brave because the mountain was dangerous.
