HAPPY BIRTHDAY SUPERMAN

Superman, the first comic book "superhero", is 75 years old this month. There's a lot of competition from other superheroes, but Superman is still number one...

AN AMERICAN HERO

In 1938, Superman appeared in the first issue of Actiion Comics. At the time, the economy was bad in the USA and Americans needed heroes to give them hope. Superman was perfect: he fought coruption and poverty in Metropolis. Superman was also an immigrant, just like many Americans at the time. Like them, he wanted to succeed in the USA... so he had lots in common with them!

SUPERMAN FILMS

Superman moved from comic books to other media. He became a daily newspaper comic strip, a radio series and an animated cartoon. Then, in 1978, Superman conquered the world with actor Christopher Reeve. The most recent TV series is Smallville about young Clark Kent before he became superman. In 2013, there will be two new Superman films.

THE HOST

This is the film of a book by Stephenie Meyer, the author of the Twilight series. There are no vampires this time - Earth has been infiltrated by parasitic aliens called "souls", which possess  humans. There's a love story, of course, between a boy and a "soul". Twilight fans will be happy!

CRAZY CHAPLIN

This sculpture of Charlie Chaplin was made by Scottish artist David Mach. But he doesn't use normal materials... he uses matches. It takes a lot of patience to make a sculpture. And when an exhibition opens, the artist sets his work on fire to make new art!

WRITING UNIT 8

Marta Laura, Laura! Can you hear me? I need some help!
Laura Marta? Where are you? What happened?
Marta I'm in the sea. I was sailing near the coast and the tide pushed me into the deep. I hit with the rocks and there's a hole in the boat and it is sinking.
Laura Are you OK? Can you move?
Marta No, I think I've injured my foot when I hit the rock. I can't move it and it really hurts. What   am I going to do?
Laura Don't panic! Let's phone the coastguards.
Marta OK, but hurry up! I don't know how long I can stand here.
Laura OK, OK, hang on! I'm sure that someone will come soon.
Marta Laura!
Laura Now what's happening?
